Atrophaneura impediens

Atrophaneura impediens is a butterfly from Australasia / Indomalaya ecozone (Australia). The first description was in 1895 by Rotschild. The wingspan is about 10 – 11 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. Atrophaneura impediens is black. It has big salmon spots. The underside of the body has red hairs.

Description

The fore wings are black. The veins partly bordered by brown colour.
The underside of Atrophaneura impediens is very similar to the upside. But, the basic colour is dark-brown.

The hind wings of Atrophaneura impediens are black and they have tails. The edge is wavy. At the edge there is a chain of big salmon spots.
The underside is very similar to the upside.

The body (abdomen) is black. The thorax is black. The head is red. The underside of head and abdomen has red hairs. 

Sex differences: The female covers the upper range of the wing-span.


Distribution

Atrophaneura impediens is a butterfly from the Australasia / Indomalaya (Australia) ecozone. You can observe this butterfly in Taiwan.
