Callicore hystaspes

Callicore hystaspes is a pretty butterfly from Neotropic ecozone (South America). The first description was in 1781 by Fabricius. The wingspan is about 3.0 – 4.0 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family NYMPHALIDAE. Callicore hystaspes is black. It has a broad, red band on its forewings. On each wing there is an area with blue structure colour. The underside is very glorious.

Description
The forewings are black. At the wing tip there is a little, yellow spot. The wing is dominated by a broad, red band. Next to the body there is an area with blue structure colour.
The underside of Callicore hystaspes is black. There is a thin, blue stripe at the outer edge. In the wing tip there is a yellow stripe. The wing is dominated by a broad, red band. Next to the body there is a beige area.
The hind wings of Callicore hystaspes are black. The outer edge is a little bit wavy. At the back edge there shines a big area by blue structure colour.
The underside is beige or yellow. In the middle of the wing you can see the cipher eight. This cipher contains three bluish-white spots. The cipher is surrounded by a black line. Next to the body and at the outer edge there are also a black line. Furthermore there is a blue line at the outer edge. There is a red spot at the wing leading edge.
The body is black, but the underside has some yellow stripes.
