Subfamily: APATURINAE

The Purple Emperor or the Japanese Emperor are typical members of the APATURINAE. Some of this species have blue structure colors on there wings.  This optical phenominon based on refraction and interference.
The subfamily of APATURINAE contains nineteen genera.

The following species are members of the genus APATURA and they are represented on this homepage.

The genus APATURA was described in 1896 by Moore. It contains at present approx. 4 species. The genus APATURA is thereby a tiny-small group under the Nymphalidae.

MIMATHYMA butterflies are from Asia and Australia.
