Graphium macleayanus (Macleay´s Swallowtail)

Graphium macleayanus, also called Macleay´s Swallowtail is a butterfly from Australasia / Indomalaya ecozone (Australia). The first description was in 1814 by Leach. The wingspan is about 6 – 8 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of Graphium macleayanusvis black. Large green spots and areas dominate the wings.

Description

The fore wings are black. At the outer edge there is a chain of little green spots. At the front edge there are two large green spots. Next to the body there is a large greenish area.
The underside of Graphium macleayanus is very similar to the upside. But the basic colour of the wing-tip is brown. And the area around the body is green and white.

The hind wings of Graphium macleayanus are black and they have tails. The edge is wavy. Next to the body there is a large greenish area. At the outer edge there is a chain of little spots.
The underside is very similar to the upside. But,  the basic colour is brown.

The body (abdomen) is yellowish. The thorax and the head are black. The underside of all parts is yellowish.

Sex differences: The female has no spots on the hind wings.
