Hypolimnas dexithea

Hypolimnas dexithea is a great butterfly from Afrotopic ecozone (Africa). The first description was in 1863 by Hewitson. With a wingspan of 9.0 – 11.0 cm Hypolimnas dexithea is a small member of the family NYMPHALIDAE, but it is a big member of the genus Hypolimnas. The butterfly is black with white and auburn areas.

Description

The forewings are black. The margin is ridged. At the margin there is a chain of short white stripes. There is a broad white band on wing. At the pinion there are some little white spots. Nearby the body there is a whitish spot.
The underside is auburn. All criteria from upside are also there.

The underside is auburn. All criteria from upside are also there.

The body is brown, but the upside is black.
