Iphiclides podalirinus

Iphiclides podalirinus is a butterfly from the Palaearctic ecozone (Asia). The first description was in 1890 by Oberthür. The wingspan is about 6 – 7 cm. Iphiclides podalirinus is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of this butterfly is dark-brown with yellow and red stripes. The hind wings have long tails.

Description

The fore wings are dark-brown. Some yellow stripes dominate the wing.
The underside of Iphiclides podalirinus is very similar to the upside. But, the yellow stripes are broader. And there is an additional yellow stripe.

The hind wings of Iphiclides podalirinus are brown and they have long tails. The edge is wavy. Two broad, yellow stripes dominate the wing. Between these two stripes there is a red strip. The outer edge is black and contains one chain of blue and yellow spots. At the inner edge there is a large black eye with blue core and a red eye shadow. 
The underside is yellow. Four black stripes and one red strip dominate the wing. The outer edge is black and contains one chain of blue spots. At the inner edge there is a large black eye with blue core and a red-white eye shadow.

The body is black. The thorax is black. The head is black. The underside of all parts is yellow.

Distribution

Iphiclides podalirinus is a butterfly from the Palaearctic (Asia) ecozone. The area of ​​distribution of this butterfly is restricted to Tibet.
