Papilio chikae (Luzon Peacock Swallowtail)

Papilio chikae, also called Luzon Peacock Swallowtail is a butterfly from Australasia / Indomalaya ecozone (Australia). The first description was in 1965 by Igarashi. The wingspan is about 11 – 12 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. Papilio chikae is black. At the hind wings there is a chain of red spots and a bluish-green area.

Description

The fore wings are black. The whole wing is spotted by green scales.
The underside of Papilio chikae is dark-brown. At the outer edge there is a white band with dark veins.

The hind wings of Papilio chikae are black and they have tails. The edge is wavy. The whole wing is spotted by green scales. At the edge there is a chain of red spots. At the outer edge there is a bluish-green area.  
The underside is black. The inner half of the wing is spotted by whitish scales. At the edge there is a chain of red spots. 

The body is black and it is spotted by green scales.   

Sex differences: The male has less red spots than the female on the upside of hind wings. But, the male has a bigger bluish-green area than the female.


Distribution

Papilio chikae is a butterfly from the Australasia / Indomalaya (Australia) ecozone. This butterfly is an endemic species from the Philippines.

General information

The first description of this butterfly was in 1965 by Igarashi. There are no subspecies.

Papilio chikae is strictly protected. It is listed in the appendix I from CITES.
