Papilio grosesmithi

Papilio grosesmithi is a butterfly from Afrotropic ecozone (Africa). The first description was in 1926 by Rothschild. The wingspan is about 9 – 10 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. Papilio grosesmithi is black. It has yellow bands and spots. The hind wings have tails.

Description

The fore wings are black. At the edge there is a chain of yellow spots. In the middle of the wing there is a chain of big yellow spots. At the wing leading edge there are some big yellow spots. Next to the body the wing is spotted by fine yellow scales.
The underside of Papilio grosesmithi is very similar to the upside. But, all yellow spots are bigger.

The hind wings of Papilio grosesmithi are black and they have tails. The edge is very wavy. The biggest part of the wing is spotted by fine yellow scales. At the edge there is a chain of big yellow spots. At the wing leading edge there is a big eye-spot. A broad yellow band is crossing the wing. At the inner edge there is a blue-red eye-spot.
The underside is very similar to the upside. But, all yellow spots are bigger.

The body (abdomen) is yellow and has black stripes. Head and thorax are black and they have yellow stripes.  

Sex differences: none.


Distribution

Papilio grosesmithi is a butterfly from the Afrotropic (Africa) ecozone. You can observe this butterfly in Madagascar.

The first description of this butterfly was in 1926 by Rothschild. There are no subspecies.
