Papilio hectorides

Papilio hectorides is a butterfly from Neotropic ecozone (South America). The first description was in 1794 by Esper. The wingspan is about 8 – 9 cm. Papilio hectorides is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of this butterfly is dark brown and it has yellow and red spots. A yellow band dominates the wings. The hind wings have tails.

Description / Beschreibung

The fore wings are dark brown. A yellow band dominates the wing.
The underside of Papilio hectorides is very similar to the upside. But, at the outer edge there is an additional chain of yellow spots. At the front edge there are yellow stripes.

The hind wings of Papilio hectorides are brown and they have tails. The edge is wavy. A broad, yellow band dominates the wing. At the outer edge there is a chain of little, yellow spots. In the middle of the wing there are some red spots.
The underside is very similar to the upside. But, there are more red and yellow spots.

The body is brown. The thorax is brown. The head brown. The underside of all parts is yellow.  

Sex differences: The bands of the females are white. They have more red spots.

Papilio hectorides is a butterfly from the Neotropic ecozone (South America). The area of ​​distribution of this butterfly stretches from Argentina to the South of Brazil.
