Papilio hellanichus

Papilio hellanichus is a butterfly from Neotropic ecozone (South America). The first description was in 1868 by Hewitson. The wingspan is about 8 – 9 cm. Papilio hectorides is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of this butterfly is dark brown. Yellow and orange spots dominate the wings. The hind wings have short tails.

Description / Beschreibung

The fore wings are dark brown. A chain of large orange-yellow spots dominates the wing. At the outer edge there is a chain of little yellow spots. At the front edge there is a yellow spot.
The underside of Papilio hellanichus is very similar to the upside. But, the yellow spots are larger.

The hind wings of Papilio hellanichus are dark brown and they have short tails. The edge is wavy. In the middle of the wing there is a chain of large orange-yellow spots. At the outer edge there is a chain of little, yellow spots. There are some blue spots.
The underside is yellow and the veins are dark. The outer edge is dark brown and contains a chain of little, white spots.

The body (abdomen) is black. The thorax is black. The head black. The underside of all parts is black. The underside of abdomen has white spots.  

Sex differences: None.

Papilio hellanichus is a butterfly from the Neotropic ecozone (South America). The area of ​​distribution of this butterfly stretches from Brazil to Argentina.
