Papilio troilus (Spicebush Swallowtail)

Papilio troilus, also called Spicebush Swallowtail, is a butterfly from Nearctic ecozone (North America). The first description was in 1758 by Linnaeus. The wingspan is about 7 – 9 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. Papilio troilusis black. It has yellow and red spots.

Description

The fore wings are black. At the outer edge there is a chain of yellow spots.
The underside of Papilio troilus is dark-brown. At the outer edge there are two chains of yellow spots.

The hind wings of Papilio troilus are black and they have tails. The edge is strong wavy. At the outer edge there is a chain of big yellow spots. There are two red spots on the wing. In the middle of the wing there is a yellowish band. 
The underside is dark-brown. At the outer edge there are two chains of red spots. Between these chains there is a bluish band.

The body is black. It has some yellow dots. 

Sex differences: The basic colour of the female is dark-brown. There is no yellowish band on the hind wings.


Distribution

Papilio troilus is a butterfly from the Nearctic (North America) ecozone. You can observe this butterfly in the East of USA.

General information
