Papilio ulysses (Blue Emperor, Odysseusfalter, Empereur Bleu)

Papilio ulysses, also called Blue Emperor or Blue Mountain Swallowtail is a great butterfly from Australasia / Indomalaya ecozone (Australia). The first description was in 1758 by Linnaeus. The wingspan is about 12.0 – 14.0 cm. The Blue Emperor is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The butterfly is black with broad iridescence blue areas. Hind wings have tails.

These are nice photos of Papilio ulysses (Blue Emperor, Odysseusfalter, Empereur Bleu) (male). Papilio ulysses is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE from Australasia / Indomalaya ecozone (Australia).

Description

The forewings are black. There is a very big iridescence blue area with some black veins and one black spot on wing. Next to the margin there are some hairy areas.
The underside is dark brown. In the middle of wing there is a big whitish area like a triangle.

The hind wings are black and have tails. The margin is ridged. The bigger part of the wing is iridescence blue.
The underside is dark brown. In the middle of wing there is a whitish band. Next to the margin there is a chain of big blue and brown eyes.

The body
is black, but the upside is a little bit powdered by blue scales.

Sex differences:
The Females has no hairy areas on wing. They have a chain of blue spots on hind wings. The blue of female is not brilliant as the blue of male.

The Blue Emperor (Papilio ulysses) is a butterfly of the Australasia / Indomalaya ecozone (Australia). The distribution include the North of Australia and Papua New Guinea.

General information

The first description of this butterfly was in 1758 by Linnaeus. There are many subspecies.
