Tribe LEPTOCIRCINI contains eight genera. Nearly all members of this tribe have very long tails on backwings. Therefore some of these named Swordtail.

The first description of this genus was in 1961 by Munroe. The genus PROTOGRAPHIUM contains about 15 species. Therefore it is a small group of PAPILIONIDAE. PROTOGRAPHIUM butterflies are from Australasia / Indomalaya (Australia), Neactic (North America) and Neotropic (South America) ecozone.
