Papilio himeros

Papilio himeros is a butterfly from Neotropic ecozone (South America). The first description was in 1866 by Hopffer. The wingspan is about 8 – 9 cm. Papilio himeros is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. The basic colour of this butterfly is dark brown. Yellow band and areas dominate the wings. The hind wings have tails.

Description / Beschreibung

The fore wings are brown. A broad, yellow band dominates the wing.
The underside of Papilio himeros is yellow. The outer edge is brown and contains a yellow stripe.

The hind wings of Papilio himeros are yellow and they have tails. The edge is wavy. The outer part of the wing is brown and contains a chain of yellow spots. At the inner edge there is a red spot.
The underside is very similar to the upside. But, there are additional red and yellow spots.

The body (abdomen) is brown with yellow stripes. The thorax is brown. The head is brown. The underside of all parts is yellow.

Sex differences: Both sexes are very similar. But the female has more red spots.

Papilio himeros is a butterfly from the Neotropic ecozone (South America). The area of distribution of this butterfly is restricted to Brazil.
